Summary

Two settings decide what a Scout probe does: its target networks, meaning what it scans, and its licence, meaning how many devices it can cover. This lesson shows where you set the networks, why you should assign only the network the probe sits on, and how to read the licence, whether individual or shared in a group.

Chapters

Key points

  • Where to set the networks. On Internal Probes, open the probe's menu, choose Edit and then the Networks tab. There you find Network ranges to scan and the Add CIDR / IP button.
  • CIDR notation. Networks are written in CIDR notation: for example 192.0.2.0/24 means the 256 addresses from 192.0.2.0 to 192.0.2.255.
  • Only the probe's own network. Enter the network the probe sits on. ARP does not cross routers: a network behind a router is scanned only in a reduced mode or shows as unreachable, never as empty. To analyse another network in depth, install another probe on it.
  • What a licence is. A licence is an asset capacity plus an expiry date. A probe installed on its own has an individual licence: click the licence to open the Probe License window, which shows the assets used against the available capacity and how many days remain until renewal.
  • What counts. The count is the number of distinct devices seen in the last 90 days. Scanning the same device again does not use more capacity.
  • Shared licence in a group. The probes in a group share a single licence: they draw on the same capacity and have the same expiry. A device seen by two probes in the same group counts only once.
  • What does not count. Phones and tablets never use licence capacity. Devices outside the probe's networks, or only glimpsed without a real assessment, do not count either. That is why the licence count can be lower than the number of assets a scan finds.
  • Free trial. A company's first probe can start with a free 30-day trial with no asset limit, shown as Free trial — unlimited. The trial covers one probe per company.
  • Going over capacity. If the count goes above the capacity you get 30 days of grace; after that, new scans are paused until you increase the capacity, while existing results stay available.
