Probe license over capacity or not active
What the internal-scan license messages mean, how long you have to add capacity and how to unlock the probe again.

Internal scans are covered by the license of the probe (or of its group), not by Cyber Tokens. When the counted devices exceed the capacity, or when the license is not active, RECON tells you in the Probe License block and, after the timings described here, pauses new scans.
Symptoms
In the Probe License block of the scan dialog, or in the license indicator of the probe or group, you see one of these messages:
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Over by N — X days to add capacity before new scans pause." | You are over capacity and inside the grace period. |
| "Over capacity by N — add capacity to start new scans. Existing results stay viewable." | The grace period has ended: new scans are paused. |
| No active license with "This probe needs a license to scan. Your trial ended or the license expired — buy a bundle to unlock." | The probe has neither a trial nor a valid license. |
| License not shared | You are using a colleague's probe and they have not shared the license with you. |
| Owner has no license | The probe owner's license has expired or is missing. |
In Schedules, scheduled internal scans can report the same reasons, for example "The license is over capacity — add capacity to start new scans." or "This probe needs an active license to scan."
Causes
- Over capacity, in grace. The distinct devices assessed in the last 90 days exceed the capacity you bought.
- Over capacity for 30 days. The grace period is time-based only: 30 calendar days after the probe first went over, new scans pause.
- No active license. The 30-day trial has ended, the 12-month license has expired, or the probe never had the trial (each company gets one trial, for a single probe).
- License not shared. The owner gave you access to the probe but did not let you scan with their license.
- Owner's license expired. You are using a colleague's probe whose license is no longer valid.
Solutions
You are in the grace period
The scan that revealed the overage always completes, and you can keep scanning for 30 days. You get a notification when the grace period starts, with its deadline.
Open the license block
In Internal Probes, open the probe's scan dialog, or click the license indicator of the probe or group.
Add capacity
Press the "Over by N — buy more capacity" button. The purchase opens in your Orizon account with the probe and a capacity tier already selected. You can also use Pay per asset instead.
Wait for activation
While the new capacity is being registered the button shows Activating…. Capacity from multiple purchases adds up.
New scans are paused
Existing results stay viewable. Add capacity as above: once the capacity covers the counted devices again, you can start new scans, scheduled ones included.
No active license
A probe without a license cannot scan and its scans do not open. Press Buy a license to unlock in the Probe License block and complete the purchase. Above 1,000 assets the button becomes Contact sales for unlimited.
If you deleted a licensed probe, do not buy a new license: reactivate it from the same host to recover its license (see the article on managing probes).
License not shared
Ask the owner to enable sharing for your account:
- for a single probe, in the scan's share dialog, with the Let them run scans with my probe license option;
- for a group, in the group's Manage access, with the Share pooled license with this user switch.
Owner's license expired
Only the owner can renew the license. Ask them to renew it: until they do, you cannot scan with that probe.
Prevention
- Keep an eye on the license indicator: 30 days before expiry it shows "Renews in N days", and in the last 7 days the Renew license button appears.
- Remember that the count is distinct devices over the last 90 days, inside the probe's networks: assign the probe only the networks you really want to cover.
- Personal phones and tablets are not counted, so you do not need to exclude them by hand.
- When you add new sites or segments, check the capacity before the first scan.
Contact support
If you bought capacity but the block still shows the overage or No active license, contact support with the name of the probe or group and the time of the purchase.
